Cassava Chips Production in Nigeria
Cassava (Manihot spp) is a tropical perennial crop cultivated mainly for its edible root, is a staple food consumed worldwide and provides much economic benefit to the producers. Cassava can be processed in a variety of ways to arrive at different products including as gari, fufu, lafun, starch, chips and pellets, etc.
Food processing sub-sector possesses has the greatest potential for growth in Nigeria. Growth rate of more than 9% is envisaged looking at growing urbanization, population explosion and changing food consumption pattern among Nigerians for natural foods and products. This has inevitably increased daily consumption of cassava and its derivatives.
Cassava Chips are non-fermented cylindrically shaped products of about 3-5mm in diameter obtained from freshly harvested Cassava roots. They are now gaining prominence in Nigeria and all over the world as viable ingredient for compounding animal feeds for pigs, dairy cattle, poultry, fish etc. They are accepted because cassava is just like feed grains which consist almost entirely of starch and easy to digest. Many feeding experiments have shown that cassava provides good quality carbohydrates which may be substituted for maize or barley. It cannot be used as sole feed stuff because of its deficiency in protein and vitamins; it must therefore be supplemented by other feeds that are rich in these elements. Cassava chips are also widely used for the production of ethanol which is gaining much currency as bio-fuel because of its safer and more ecological friendly qualities.
Cassava Chips is the most common form in which dried cassava roots are marketed and most exporting countries produce them. The chips are dried irregular slices of roots, which vary in size but should not exceed 5 cm in length so that they can be stored in silos.
This cassava chips project involves starting a small  scale cassava chips manufacturing factory in any big city of Nigeria which will produce premium quality cassava chips to be sold in the local market, competing with a few existing brands. The factory will be equipped with modern automated machinery for all the processes in order to ensure the quality of the final products.
The SWOT analysis showed that the opportunities of the business outweigh the challenges and was concluded that cassava chip production idea is healthy and feasible in Nigeria
